Mission Driven in Vision

But since Jesus ascended into heaven, how do we see him that we
might follow his lead?  We look for signs of Holy Spirit bringing heaven
to us, transforming our lives and our world.   We don’t see them
clearly, but as in a mirror or dark glass.  Nevertheless, God has given us
the gift of faith to see Jesus in our world, and Holy Spirit brings our
view into focus by nurturing that gift.

This nurturing often occurs through the intentional discipline of
growing in the marks of discipleship.  The mistake churches often
make is to assume that growing in the marks of discipleship means
getting people more involved in what the institution is doing -- sit on a
committee, come to a class, help with a service project, etc.  But if our
first priority is to follow Jesus in the world, then the institution needs
to get more involved in what people are doing to be the church in the
world 24/7/365.

For this reason, the church coaches people to grow in the marks of
discipleship: we follow Jesus and participate in his mission to reconcile
all things to God by . . .

Living Worship
The mission of every congregation and the
purpose of everyone’s unique vocation is to
“Go, make disciples of all peoples . . .” (Matt.
28.18).  Simply put, a disciple is someone who
follows Jesus.  This doesn’t mean we just
learn about him, try to follow his example,
and be good churchy people.  Rather, because
Jesus is risen, alive, and fulfilling his
messianic mission to reconcile all things to
God, then to be his disciple means to
see him
in our world at work
and follow him so that
we too may get involved in what God is doing.
